The types of materials used a lot in precision mechanical processing
Precision mechanical processing is increasingly diversified in terms of production materials in order to create high-quality products that meet the strict standards of the market.
When our country started to enter the path of integration with the world, foreign companies also invested in our country more and more. Most of these are manufacturing enterprises. Therefore, the quality requirements of materials for supporting industries are also higher in terms of durability as well as aesthetics.
So, today, we Cosmovina , through this article, share with you about the most commonly used materials today in precision mechanical machining . So, but what kind of material does that include? Let’s take a look together in the next part of the article below.
Types of materials commonly used in precision mechanical processing
1. Iron
According to wikipedia : ” Iron is the name of a chemical element in the periodic table of elements with symbol Fe, atomic number 26, subgroup VIIIB, period 4. Iron is an abundant element on Earth, constituting the outer and inner shells of the Earth’s core. Iron and nickel are known to be the last two elements that can be synthesized in stellar nuclei (formed by nuclear reactions at the centers of stars) without the need for a supernova explosion or fluctuations. other big. Therefore iron and nickel are quite abundant in metallic meteorites and rocky core planets (such as Earth, Mars).”
Currently, the demand for mechanical processing is very high. Therefore, iron is a widely used material in this industry, accounting for about 95% of the total volume of metal produced in the world. Referring to iron, it is impossible not to mention advantages such as: low cost, good bearing capacity, high ductility and hardness, so it can be easily processed on demand.
Some applications from iron in mechanical processing must be mentioned such as: manufacturing cars, correct frames for construction works or making ships’ hulls….
2. Steel
“ Steel is an alloy with the main composition being iron (Fe), with carbon (C), from 0.02% to 2.14% by weight, and some other chemical elements. They increase the hardness, restrict the movement of iron atoms in the crystal structure under the influence of many different causes .”
There are many standards to classify steel. However, we will only introduce to you the two main types of steel most commonly used today. These are carbon steel and alloy steel.
Carbon steel is divided as follows:
– Low carbon steel: carbon content ≤ 0.25%.
– Medium carbon steel: carbon content 0.25 – 0.6%.
– High carbon steel: 0.6 – 2% carbon content.
This type of steel has the following advantages: Carbon steel is widely used in general engineering and machine building because of the following three advantages:
1) Cheap, easy to get without having to use expensive alloying elements.
2) Has certain synthetic mechanical properties suitable for common conditions.
3) Has good technological properties: easy to cast, roll, forge, spin, weld, and cut (compared to alloy steel).
Alloy steels are also divided as follows:
– Low alloy steel: total content of other metal elements ≤ 2.5%.
– Medium alloy steel: total content of other metal elements 2.5-10%.
– High alloy steel: total content of other metal elements > 10%.
The main advantages of alloy steel are: For alloy steels in general, they will have a certain strength, a strength that is much higher than that of carbon steels. This was especially evident after they were heat treated and tempered.
In addition, this steel has high heat resistance. Alloy steel itself can retain its shrinkage properties in the quenched state with temperatures possibly higher than 2000 degrees Celsius. To be able to achieve these, alloy steels must be alloyed with elements. in relatively high concentrations.
3. Cast iron

Cast iron is an alloy of iron and carbon, adding some elements such as: Si, Mn, P, S, Cr, Ni, Mo, Mg, Cu… . In which, the carbon content is greater than 2.14%.
Cast iron has the advantages of good castability, low shrinkage, high fluidity and easy filling of the mold; Strong compressive strength, good static load capacity and wear resistance.
