Sheet metal processing methods
There are many different sheet metal processing methods and processes. In this article, Cosmovia will introduce you to popular sheet metal processing methods.
Methods of metal shaping
Metal forming methods include bending, rolling, and forging. In this metal forming method, the cohesion of the material is maintained, the shape of the workpiece is modified to shape the desired product through deformation. The deformation resistance of metals at room temperature is higher than the melting temperature. Therefore, it is easier and less labor intensive to perform at high temperature than at room temperature. In addition, the high-temperature sheet metal treatment contributes to immediate, non-hardening recrystallization of the metal.
In metal forming, there are common distinctions : hot working and cold working .
Hot working is done at high temperature. Requires less force than cold working. However, its disadvantage is that the dimensional tolerance and surface finish are also worse.
Cold working achieves much more precise dimensional tolerances. In this method of metalworking, the material is not heated, which increases its strength. The disadvantage is that it cannot be welded after machining. The workpiece can only be welded when it is softened during sheet metal processing.
Separation method
Sheet metal separation methods include cutting, stamping, etc. In this group of separation methods, the shape of a solid (workpiece) is changed by removing part of the material (local removal).
Separation is a metalworking technique that includes the following subgroups:
Cup
Disassemble
Machining with geometrically defined cutting edges
Machining with undefined cutting edges
The cutting methods in sheet metal processing include sawing, milling, filing, drilling, turning, grinding, heat cutting, broaching, honing. In metalworking, the actual cutting takes place at the point of action (the point where the tool acts on the workpiece). Regarding the cutting process in sheet metalworking, it should be noted that relative movements (cutting, feeding and infeed) are necessary. The externally supplied energy to perform the separation is converted to friction, deformation and dissipated as heat.
splicing method
Jointing is also one of the main groups of sheet metal processing methods in metal processing production technology, with the common method being welding. Within the framework of this group of methods, two or more metal parts are permanently joined together, forming a specific geometric shape. Part of this is done by using “invisible materials” as the binder.
Common joining machining methods such as welding, screwing, riveting, etc. To establish a connection between workpieces, other components such as pins, screws or rivets are sometimes needed. In addition, tools such as soldering irons, wrenches, etc. are used in this manufacturing method
Surface treatment
In metalworking, surface treatment includes all methods that allow to change the surface properties of the workpiece. It is important that the main function of the workpiece in metalworking can be supplemented. The principle of functional separation between the surface and mass of a tool or part is the main goal of this metalworking manufacturing method.
The mass of the workpiece has a specific function and certain characteristics such as machinability, strength, weight. A surface technology process used in sheet metal, workpiece or tool machining can be optimized by how it meets a specific requirement:
Insulation (diffusion, permeation, anti-corrosion)
Mechanical protection (friction, wear)
Optical function (absorption, reflection, decoration)
Electrical function (insulation, conductive)
The different surface treatments that can be used in sheet metal processing are:
Surface Removal (Polishing)
Surface coating (Painting, powder coating, plating)
Mechanical surface treatment (shooting peening, grinding)
Chemical surface treatment (bleach, cleaning)
Above are the common sheet metal processing methods that we want to share with you. Hopefully the information in the article has helped you better understand sheet metal processing methods as well as choose the right method for product requirements.
